It is a measure of the ability of a lubricating oil (such as motor oils) to neutralize acids resulting from combustion, pollution, or fuel corrosion. TBN is measured in mg KOH/g, which is the number of milligrams of potassium hydroxide (KOH) needed to neutralize acids in 1 gram of oil
Why is TBN important?
-
The TBN number is important because it neutralizes acids, which limits corrosion of metal parts inside the engine.
-
It is an indicator of the quality of base additives.
-
It is important for engine oils that run on sulfur-containing fuels, such as diesel engines and marine engines.
Typical TBN values:
-
Gasoline motor oils: 7–10 mg KOH/g
-
Light diesel oils: 10–15 mg KOH/g
-
Heavy diesel/marine oils: 30–70 mg KOH/g
-
Additives: 400 mg KOH/g
TBN additive can be manufactured using economical chemical raw materials that are easily available locally and globally.
